Where is Arnes the HQ - 2016-06-13 16:59

Here are some directions to Arnes:

This link shows the route from Reykjavik City to Arnes in Google Maps

https://www.google.is/maps/dir/Reykjav%C3%ADk/%C3%81rnes+campingcround,+%C3%9Ej%C3%B3rs%C3%A1rdalsvegur,+801/@64.0315123,-21.59472,9z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x48d674b9eedcedc3:0xec912ca230d26071!2m2!1d-21.8174393!2d64.1265206!1m5!1m1!1s0x48d6ea957faf3bd9:0xf04ac70009b0ee36!2m2!1d-20.2503412!2d64.041589?hl=en

The coordinates of Arnes in Degrees are 64.0415913,-20.2525299

Simple explenation is follow road #1 from Reykjavik and continue until after Selfoss where there is a left turn at road #30 and then right turn on road #32 and Arnes is just few KM on that road.

My Phone number is 897 9882 and the pilots can send SMS or call in case of problems.

Food at Arnes - 2016-06-08 08:34

At Arnes there is a restaurant that serves breakfast and dinners.
The standard breakfast is simple one, but if many pilots go for breakfast they will make it a buffet for us.
The dinners at Arnes are traditional home cooking at 1800 ISK (€12):
14th Lasagne
15th Pasta with ham and beacon, salad and garlic bread
16th Beef stew with rice, salad and bread
The restaurant serves beer and wine.

There is also a typical gas station/grill shop at the camping.
Selling hamburgers/chicken/sandwitches and more.

They also are a minimarket with food to cook by yourself.

Camping is 1100ISK for the competition (discount from 1300ISK).
Electricity is 900ISK/day
I will have outlets in the HQ Camper for charging your stuff if wanted.

Good weather has been ordered by the weather office, not received order confirmation yet.

Entry fee deadline - 2016-05-30 16:10

The deadline for entry fee is June 1st.
Please make payment (Paypal/Swift) or make payment arrangements with the organizer.
Many have already paid or made arrangements (pay in Iceland for example)

It is important to know if there are available places as there are pilots waiting for places in the competition.

This is how fun it can be to fly in this competition.
Ozone uses photo of Herbert flying in the competition last year in the Ozone Brochure

Weather station on Burfell (main site) - 2016-05-23 11:17

Now we have installed weather station on top of Mt. Burfell.
It gives us good indication on the weather at any time.
Updated every few minutes with historical information, so we can see changes of weather if any.

You can also see some of our other weather stations at popular flying sites by selecting in the menu.
And we not only have the weather station, we also have web camera on top of Burfell.

And if anyone is interested in the monitoring of volcano Hekla there is a page showing all seismic movements and indications of possible eruptions.
Last eruption in Hekla was in February 2000.

See you in June

Daylight 24 hours ! - 2016-05-20 07:18

It is now official, there is daylight 24 hours a day until end of July.
This is according to aviation rules where center of the sun does not go below 6° of the horizon.
So if weather permits visual flights can be flown anytime of the day/night from now until end of July.
Actually it stays like this for longer in northern part of Iceland.
This allows for midnight paragliding flights.
Also remember this means the sun is up "early" and can be heating the terrain for long time before we fly.

The competition T-Shirts are ready - 2016-05-17 20:26

Hello all pilots.
I went to Bangkok just to get the perfect T-Shirts for the competition.
There  are photos of them here, grey (so you can wear them for days) and with white or black print.
It has the competition name on the back and on the front we have Burfell, the mountain we fly from.
See you all in June.

Outdoor pools in Iceland - 2016-05-01 22:50

There are number of places to visit in Iceland.
Many of them are linked with hot springs or pools.
Greapewine an english language media has one not so bad article on the matter:

It even has video of things you might not want to miss.

For sure the competitors will visit one abandoned pool close to takeoff.
We might even have it as goal for a task.

We had fun visiting it last year :-)

47 pilots registered - 2016-04-27 14:26

Today we have 47 pilots registered.
Most of the recent registrations are Icelandic pilots, who have the tendency to register very late.
This will be the biggest paragliding event in Iceland to date.

Because of the large number of pilots we will for sure encounter some problems during the event, but with friendly competition and good atmosphere the cooperation with pilots and good team we resolve all issues.

Welcome to Iceland PG Open 2016

Available places are getting full - almost 40 registrations today - 2016-04-17 20:48

Registrations are coming from all over the world.
Today (17.april) there are currently 40 registered pilots from 14 countries.
This competition will be full of fun, we are excited to see you all.
Icelandairs are slow in registering, but should speed up now :-)

Webcam at top of Burfell / takeoff - 2016-03-22 14:59

The spring should be coming in Iceland any day now.
Hopfully there will be not so much of snowing in the competition area.
Currently Burfell, the main takeoff mountain has no snow on top.
A webcam (updates every 5 minutes) shows no snow on Burfell (650m) , while Hekla (volcano, 1470m) has snow cover.
This webcam is on top of Burfell, with viewing direction to South-East (directly to Hekla).

March beginning has 31 pilot registered - 2016-03-11 11:27

Great to see the wide international interest in Iceland PG Open 2016.
Today there are 31 pilots registered from 11 countries.
Longest travel to the competition is  by Phil Hystek travelling from down under (Australia).
Phil participated in the competition last year also, adventure flying in Iceland is clearly a magnet.
Not only did he well in flying his paraglider, but he also did some speed wing flying, riding his unicycle down a mountain and played ukulele for us.

Registration is open - 2016-02-11 22:59

Registration is open for the Iceland PG Open 2016.

Now it is still winter and snow in Iceland, but the day gets longer every day.
For whole month before the competition there will be 24 hour daylight.
The longest day of the year is just after the competition.
If there is interest we might even have fun flight at midnight if possible during the comp at some spectacular place.
Here is a youtube video showing midnight flight in june 2011
